Does anyone still remember Windows Windows Millennium Edition (Me)? It was released on September 2000.

Windows Me did not give me a good impression. I have installed a few systems for customers who decided to upgrade their system from Windows 98 SE to Windows Me. It surprises me that it crash after 2 days it was installed. After awhile the system crash again with BSOD. Finally, the customers give up and decided to downgrade back to Windows 98 SE. From then on, those systems were working perfectly fine.
No doubt, there are also some good features that I notice in Windows Me. Here is some of the new and updated features:
- System Restore - It allows the restore of system files, drivers and the registry to a previous known state to recover from a system failure. Might not work all the time, but a huge leap from the format and reinstall approach to troubleshooting.
- System File Protection - It monitors and restores undesired changes to important Windows system files. Might be a hassle for advanced users, but gives some protection over malicious damage of system files. It was a improved version from Windows 2000.
- Windows Movie Maker - It is new and it allows basic editing of home videos.
- Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) - It adds the ability for the computer to request ports autonomously to the router.
- New TCP/IP Stack - Windows Me includes the Windows 2000 networking stack and architecture which was known to be more reliable, full-featured, stable and offered better performance. Support for networking over FireWire, wireless infrared and a new Home Networking wizard is also included.
- Automatic Updates - The Automatic Updates utility automatically downloads and installs critical updates from the Windows Update Web site with little user interaction. It is set up to check Windows Update once every 24 hours by default. Users can choose to download which update that they want, although high-priority updates must be downloaded and installed.
- Inbuilt ZIP support - It allows the creation and extraction of ZIP folders natively in Windows. Improved version from Windows 98 Plus! pack.
- Image preview - It inbuilt picture viewer for many of the popular photo and image formats.
- And many more.
Although, Windows Me was known as the shortest lifespan operating system ever created. I won’t be surprise if most of you guys never ever heard of the name, Windows Millennium Edition (Me).
If you ask me what I think about Windows Vista and there would be only one answer, and it would be “Windows Vista is the grandson of Windows Me”. Windows Vista have been released more than a year ago but up to this very moment with the newest release Service Pack 1, Windows Vista is still very unstable and facing many compatibility issues.
Windows Vista is just a stepping stone for Microsoft to release their upcoming Windows 7. It would be expected to be release on end of 2009. Well, that’s what Microsoft expected too. I already take a brief tour on some screenshots which leaked out and it look just like current Windows Vista but it has improved some features and added new stuffs.
I, myself won’t be upgrade my system to run on Windows Vista. No, it is not my type. I wanted an operating system which runs stable and reliable. To be honest, I am still running on Windows 2000 Professional SP4 while many of you were running on Windows XP SP2. Windows 2000 SP4 was the best and most stable operating system. I never had problem with BSOD on my system which still running on Windows 2000 Professional SP4. My brother has another system of his own, which running on Windows XP SP2 and he got BSOD a few times.
I’m hoping that my system can still work and running fine until the new version of Windows was release. Then I would customise my new system to run on Windows 7. Let’s wait for the next generation of Windows.
